  • Energy crunch for UK power in seven years

  • Steve Holliday, chief executive of National Grid told the Times newspaper that Britain could face regular blackouts within seven years if the Government does not intervene to prevent an energy gap that will be created by future power station closures. The warning came after Ofgem, the energy industry regulator, said it was to consider fresh incentives to encourage the development of renewable energy schemes in Britain.

Rainwater Harvesting.

Did you know that about 50% of your water needs do not need to be of drinking water quality (also referred to as Potable water)? Have a look at the table below to see what you can use rainwater for.

Typical Water Consumption
Potable (Mains supplied) Non-Potable (Rainwater supplied)
Personal Washing (baths/showers etc) - 38% WC Flushing - 33%
Washing Up (including dishwashers) - 7% Laundry (including washing machines) - 13%
Drinking Water - 2% Car Washing & Garden Watering - 7%

Capturing the water that falls on your roof can be as simple as adding water butts to your down-pipe to underground tanks which hold enough water to supply WC's and washing machines. See Above Ground Systems and Below Ground Systems for more details

Capturing Your Water

Rainwater Harvesting OverviewSystems are suitable for both domestic and commercial applications as the principle is the same, it's the size of the tank that differs and this will be based upon the area of roof and individual usage requirements.

All systems are UK Rainwater Harvesting Association accredited and feature:-

  • Adjustable dome for ease if installation
  • High performance submersible pump for security of supply
  • Minimum routine maintenance for reliable hassle free use
  • Strengthened tanks - usually not requiring any reinforcing concrete.
  • Filtering before storage keeps the water cleaner and odour free.

Save Money!

Not only can a rainwater harvesting solution reduce your metered water by about half but it may be possible to reduce your sewerage charges if you can show that surface water falling on to your property does not drain directly into the public sewer.

Using rainwater in your garden allows your plants to grow better as it does not contain chemicals, such as chlorine, as found in mains water and is also, therefore, ideal for topping up fish tanks and ponds.

Hosepipe Ban?

What hosepipe ban!. You can continue to use your hosepipe (or irrigation system) during hosepipe bans as long as your tank does not have a mains supply backup.
